Abstract:
To provide a noble metal-based electrode for a spark plug for an internal combustion engine having excellent consumption resistance, and to provide a method capable of relatively inexpenfively producing the noble metal-based electrode.
The noble metal-based electrode for a spark plug contains platinum and/or iridium by ≥80 wt% in total, the whole is composed of a columnar sintered compact, and the tip part thereof is partially melted and is thereafter solidified, so as to be a dense structure. The electrode can be produced by compacting raw material powder, sintering the compact, thereafter irradiating the tip part with laser light or an electron beam, thus partially melting the tip part, and subsequently solidifying the same.
