The device for identifying an electrostatic discharge event includes a receiver for receiving an input signal, an identifier unit for comparing the received signal with a predetermined signal to determine whether the input signal is an electrostatic discharge event signal, and an output circuit for outputting an identification signal when the input signal is identified as an electrostatic discharge event signal. The received input signal contains a spectrum having a predetermined amount of energy at one or more frequencies. The identification unit further includes a spectrum detector for comparing the spectrum of the received input signal with the spectrum of the electrostatic discharge event signal.
