PURPOSE: To eliminate the need to provide a light measuring means specially and to perform accurate control, by opening a shutter twice, and measuring the mean value of a signal firstly, and then controlling the shutter speed and aperture according to the obtained value.
CONSTITUTION: In a figure, A is the signal of a shutter button 23, B is pulses for opening and closing the shutter 22, and C is pulses for reading the mean value of an image pickup element 1; and the mean value of a signal read out during said period is detected by a mean value detecting circuit 25 and aperture 21 and the speed of the shutter 22 are controlled according to the mean value. Further, D is pulses for reading a normal signal after the shutter 22 is opened and closed and the driving of the image pickup element and the reading of the signal are carried out at normal timing.
