PURPOSE: To enable setting of the central position of a tested piece at a fixed height even when the length thereof is varied by a method wherein upper and lower crossheads are made independent and elevatable respectively and positions thereof are set by friction clamps.
CONSTITUTION: Upper and lower crossheads 4 and 3 are connected with a fixed bed 1 or a table 2 which is movable up and down so as to approach and leave the fixed bed 1 and to which the testing load is applied, by a pair of vertical struts 5 and 6, respectively. Furthermore, hydraulic jacks 11 and 12 are provided for connecting struts 5 and 6, thus each of crossheads 3 and 4 being constituted in an independent and elevatable fashion. In addition, a friction clamp mechanism 13 is provided on the lower crosshead 3, while another friction clamp mechanism 14 being provided on the upper crosshead 4, and, after the heads 3 and 4 are elevated or lowered repspectively, the struts 5 and 6 are clamped through friction by these mechanisms, thereby the heads 3 and 4 are fixed to the set positions.
