The composite machine 50 has an I/O port 64 for inputting commands to communicate email that are output from a terminal device 70. A storage device 56 stores information indicating whether or not email can be communicated by means of the servers 80, 82. If the instruction to communicate email is input while the storage device 56 stores the information indicating that it can be communicated, a control device 54 outputs a connection establishment signal (e.g., SYN signal) to the servers 80, 82. After the connection establishment signal has been output to the servers 80, 82, the email is communicated between the composite machine 50 and the servers 80, 82. Meanwhile, if the instruction to communicate email is input while the storage device 56 stores information indicating that it cannot be communicated, the control device 54 inhibits the connection establishment signal from being output to the servers 80, 82.
