To bring out potential advantage of a system stopping fuel injection to part of cylinders.
This invention relates to a method for controlling operation of an engine connected to a catalyst for exhaust emission control. In this method under a predetermined condition, the engine is operated under a condition where lean air fuel mixture is burned in a first cylinder group 210 and only air (namely, without fuel injection) is fed to a second cylinder group 220. Additionally, the engine control method provides air fuel ratio control with combining the split air/lean modes. Additionally, in the engine control method, the engine is shifted to a state that combustion occurs in all cylinders under a pre-selected operation condition of purge of stored oxide in an exhaust control device.
