To improve combustion efficiency of an internal combustion engine by effectively utilizing urea water in purifying nitrogen oxides contained in exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine using urea water.
A reformer 15 generates ammonia from urea water from a urea water tank 12, and a reformer 16 generates hydrogen from ammonia generated by the reformer 15. A reduction catalyst 30 uses ammonia generated by the reformer 15 to purify nitrogen oxides contained in exhaust gas from the inside of a cylinder 11. Ammonia generated by the reformer 15 and hydrogen generated by the reformer 16 are supplied through a fuel ammonia supply tube 26 into an intake tube 20. In the cylinder 11, ammonia and hydrogen supplied through the fuel ammonia supply tube 26 are burnt with gasoline injected by an injector 22.
