To obtain the subject compound useful as an epoxy resin modifying agent under industrially advantageous conditions in high yield and selectivity by carrying out reaction of a phenol compound with a carboxylic chloride or anhydride in the presence of a readily handleable specific solvent and an alkali metal hydroxide.
In a reaction of (A) a phenol compound with (B) a carboxylic acid chloride or carboxylic anhydride (preferably benzoyl chloride, benzoic anhydride or a derivative thereof), the reaction is carried out in the presence of (C) alcohols (preferably methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol or 2-propanol) and (D) an alkali metal hydroxide (preferably sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide). Furthermore, the components B and D are preferably used in amounts of 0.3-2.0mol and 0.8-2.0mol based on 1mol OH group of the component A respectively and the component C is preferably used in an amount of 30-300wt.% based on total weight of the component A. Thereby, e.g. an ester such as a compound having a recurring unit of the formula [(m) is 1-10; (n) is 0 or 1-10] is preferably obtained.
