PURPOSE: To make practicable the estimation of an effect of improving the coke hardness of a bulk density improver without carrying out actual carbonization by measuring the softening and smelting characteristics of a mix material for coke to which the bulk density improver has been added and also measuring a bulk density thereof by charging the material into a container.
CONSTITUTION: A bulk density improver is added to a mix material for coke which is obtained by compounding a binder and a carbon material, if required, with the principal material such as coal, petroleum, coke, etc., to obtain a specimen. The specimen is subjected to a measurement of fluidity by the Gieseler plastometer method, expansion coefficient by the dilatometer method, index by the button method, index by the Roga method or index by the Gray-King assay according to JIS M 8801 to give an indication of the softening and smelting characteristics for the specimen. Also, the specimen is charged into a container to observe its bulk density. It is observed by measuring the specific gravity of an aggregate containing interparticle voids using water as standard material. The relationship between the softening and smelting characteristics and the coke hardness is observed for each bulk density using a specific bulk density improver. The coke hardness-improving effect is estimated by the comparison of the result of the specimen with it.
