PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely purify NOx by selectively controlling a fuel injection valve and a gas feeding means according to the gas condition in a gas condition determining means when NOx occluded in a NOx occlusion reduction catalyst is purified.
SOLUTION: When a value of a rich spike execution counter, in which increment is carried out according to a load, the number of engine revolutions, a fuel injection quantity and the like of an internal combustion engine 1 and a value corresponding to a NOx quantity occluded in a NOx occlusion catalyst 28 is counted, reaches the upper limit value, a rich spike based on a purge of evaporated fuel gas and increment correction of a fuel injection quantity is executed. In this process, a purge of the evaporated gas is started when the counter value reaches a value of the remainder of subtraction of a value corresponding to a gas arrival time, which is found from a purge gas arrival time control map, based on the number of engine revolutions from the upper limit value of the rich spike execution counter, while increment control of the fuel injection quantity is carried out when the rich spike execution counter value reaches the upper limit value, so that the fuel injection increment and the evaporated fuel gas flow into the NOx occlusion catalyst 28 simultaneously substantially.
