Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide an exhaust gas purifier to control air-fuel ratio although it is deviated from the optimum purifying territory of a three way catalyst, and method thereof, concerning an exhaust gas purifier provided with an adjusting device to adjust air-fuel ratio and the three way catalyst on the exhaust side of an internal combustion engine.

CONSTITUTION: The sudden change point of a second oxygen sensor 26 is always nearly conformed to the optimum purifying territory of a three way catalyst 22 due to methane inactive characteristic. Hereby, by detecting the sudden change point of the second oxygen sensor 26 with a control device 28, and conforming the control point of air-fuel ratio of a first oxygen sensor 24 to the sudden change point of the second oxygen sensor 26, it can be conformed to the optimum purifying territory in the deteriorated condition of the three way catalyst.
