Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable to restrain deterioration of exhaust state with temperature drop of catalyst at start of a vehicle.
SOLUTION: This engine 10 is equipped with three-way catalyst 20 and NOx catalyst 22 at its exhaust passage 18. The electronic control device 40 estimates temperature of these catalysts 20, 22 (catalyst floor temperature) based on state of operation of engine at car stop. When this floor temperature is below specified value, the control device 40 raises exhaust gas temperature and promotes rise of temperature of each catalyst 20, 22, by forcefully changing combustion form from stratified combustion to stoichiometric combustion.
