PURPOSE: To eliminate a combustion residue of exhaust particulates by energizing an electric heater in such a way that after the ignition of the exhaust particulates the electric power to be supplied to the electric heater is gradually increased from a lower electric power that is lower than that at the time of ignition.
CONSTITUTION: A filter 3 for collecting an exhaust particulates is arranged in an exhaust pipe 2 of a diesel engine 1, and an electric heater 5 for heating and igniting the collected exhaust particulates is provided to one end surface of this filter 3. The electric heater 5 is energized by an ECU 17 in such a way that after the ignition of the exhaust particulates the electric power to be supplied to the electric heater 5 is gradually increased from a lower electric power that is lower than that at the time of ignition. The exhaust particulates thus collected by the filter 3 is burned at the time of the reproduction of the filter 3. Thus, a combustion residue of exhaust particulates can be eliminated, and also the reproduction can be stably carried out without cracking the filter 3.
