PURPOSE: To produce external parts for ornamentation having superior characteristics and fine appearance by plating a base material with Ni or Cr, subjecting it to ionic bombardment and forming a TiC-TiN-TiCN layer in which the amounts of C and N are gradually increased outward by bias sputtering.

CONSTITUTION: An Ni or Cr layer is formed on the surface of a base material made of a metal such as Cu, Fe, Al, a Cu-Fe-Al alloy or German silver or a resin such as polyacetal, ABS, polycarbonate or polyester by electroplating or chemical plating. After oxide on the surface of the Ni or Cr layer is perfectly removed by ionic bombardment with gaseous Ar, a TiN-TiC-TiCN film in which the amounts of N and C are gradually outward is formed by bias sputtering. Thus, external parts for ornamentation each having a film having high hardness, superior wear resistance, adhesion and fine appearance are obtd.
