To solve the problem wherein a conventional low-pass filter cuts off high-frequency signals independently of the magnitude of the signal level and to process signals selectively corresponding to their levels so as to improve reproduced picture images in picture quality in video apparatuses equipped with gamma correction circuits.

A basic filter is made variable in characteristics corresponding to the level (amplitude)of signals. For instance, the basic filter is kept holding characteristics as well as a low-pass filter, but high-frequency signals having a low signal level are selectively allowed to pass through the basic filter. Or, for instance, the basic filter is kept holding characteristics as well as a high-pass filter, but low-frequency signals having a high signal level are selectively allowed to pass through the basic filter.
