PURPOSE: To obtain a flame-retardant material excellent in thermal discoloration resistance by incorporating a flame retardant comprising a substance composed mainly of antimony compounds of ASTM No.30-0619 and 34-1262 as verified by X-ray analysis into an aqueous resin emulsion, etc., and spinning the mixture or forming it into film.
CONSTITUTION: A product obtained by treating metallic antimony with hot concentrated nitric acid, or anitmony oxide is mixed by stirring in an alkaline region with aqueous hydrogen peroxide, which is concentrated, treated with a reducing agent, such as oxalic acid, and an alkali, such as sodium hydroxide or ammonia, at from room temperature to 80°C for about 3 to 10 hr to decompose the hydrogen peroxide, neutralized, washed with water, concentrated and then boiled to give a flame retardant composed mainly of a compound of the formula (wherein 0 < ≤1). The boiling is performed in near neutral for about 3 to 8 hr. This flame retardant, excellent in thermal discoloration resistance, is incorporated into a mixture of a halogenated polymer emulsion and an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, which is spun into flame-retardant fibers. The compound of the formula is incorporated in an amount of 0.5-10wt.% into resins, such as acrylic, vinyl and urethane resins, to give various flame-retardant compositions.
