PURPOSE: To set a disc easily and surely by providing photoelectric converting means in two places and discriminating the front or rear face of a disc on a basis of detection outputs of their window hole positions and switching the rotation direction of the disc and magnetic heads in accordance with this discrimination result.
CONSTITUTION: If the set direction of a floppy disc 11 is not correct, the transmitted light or the reflected light from the disc is not made incident to detecting parts 21 and 22, and the error of insertion direction is displayed on a display device 30. If the set direction is correct and the front face is set, a photoelectric conversion signal is outputted from only the detecting part 21, and a motor 26 is rotated forward, and a magnetic head 28 is brought into contact with the disc 11 to record and reproduce information on the front face. If the set direction is correct and the rear face is set, the photoelectric conversion signal is outputted from only the detecting part 22, and the motor 26 is rotated backward, and a magnetic head 29 is brought into contact with the rear face to record and reproduce information correctly. If no signals are outputted from both detecting parts 21 and 22, a fault is displayed on the display device 30. Thus, the disc is set easily and surely.
