PURPOSE: To provide a fluorescent character display tube by forming cover glass through heating of a glass plate, and at the same time, boring a vacuum exhaust hole by means of heat processing.

CONSTITUTION: In a fluorescent character display tube having cover glass in which a vacuum exhaust hole is bored, a glass sheet is formed byheating, and at the same time, exhaust hole 2 is bored by a heating process to form cover glass 14. According to this process in which the exhaust hole 2 provided in the cover glass 14 is bored by heat processing simultaneously with glass formation, edges produced are rounded, and no micro-cracks or glass chipping will be generated in the exhaust hole 2. Either in the manufacturing process, no cracks are initiated in the cover glass 14, nor intra-tube splash is produced, which enables holding of vacuum air-tightness, and the grade of displaying can be enhanced.
