To provide a focus detector for an imaging apparatus capable of rapidly performing exact AF control by obtaining an exact AF evaluated value, without being affected by the frequency outside the corresponding area.

The focus detector for the imaging apparatus includes a lens 1; an imaging device 2; filter processing parts 23-1, 23-2 and 23-3 dividing the AF area of an imaging plane, obtained by the imaging device, into a plurality of areas and extracting the specified frequency components of the image data of the plurality of divided areas; cumulative adding parts 24-1, 24-2 and 24-3 generating the AF evaluated value, by accumulating and adding the specified frequency component from the filter processing parts; and a CPU 11 for setting the lens position from the AF evaluated value is provided with a timing generating part 26 for generating initialization timing with which the filter value of the filter processing part is initialized by each divided area.
