To provide a focusing state detecting device for a photographic lens which is inexpensive and small in power consumption and circuit scale since the number of pixels of an imaging device for focusing state detection is made lass than that of an imaging device for video or the image pickup size of the imaging device for focusing state detection is made smaller than that of the imaging device for video.
Two imaging device B and C which have different optical path lengths are provided for an imaging device A which picks up an image for video recording and subject light which make incident on the imaging device A is split and made incident on those imaging device B and C. Focus evaluated values are obtained from video signals from the imaging devices B and C and a front-focus, rear-focus, or in-focus state is detected according to the large-small relation between those focus evaluated values. As the imaging device B and C for focusing state detection, CCDs which have less pixels and smaller image pickup sizes than the imaging device A for video are used.
