To operate an alternator of an engine normally as a generator, so as to operate the alternator as a synchronous motor in accordance with an operating condition of the engine.
A battery 9 is placed in a fully charged condition, when necessity for generation in an alternator 1 is eliminated and an engine is placed in an accelerating condition, in a switching control device 5, a stator coil 12 of the alternator 1 is switched from an output control device 7 to a rotating field generating device 8. In the rotating field generating device 8, a rotating field rotated at an equal speed to a rotor 1R is generated in a stator 1S. As a result, the alternator 1 functions as a synchronous motor, engine torque or rotation assisting torque is generated. When an engine speed tends to exceed a permissible upper limit, and the engine is placed in a deceleration condition, a rotating field having a relative phase angle relating to a DC field phase of the rotor, such as generating torque suppressing an engine speed, is generated in the stator.
