To provide a GPS unit, in which quality of a display does not cause a problem even by using a low-resolution monitor and in which a map and a position can be displayed using simple map data from which the detailed part of the map is removed.

A GPS unit is provided with a storage part 1 in which simple map data is stored; with a GPS computing part 2 which processes a received GPS signal; with a position information processing part 3, to which map data to be read out from the storage part 1 and position data from the GPS computing part 2 are inputted, and which creates tracking data on an own point; with a screen creation part 4 which creates a signal, for a display screen, on the basis of output data from the position information processing part 3; and with a composite video signal creation part 5 in which the output signal of the screen creation part 4 is converted into a composite video signal which is suitable for the video input of a low resolution monitor. It is possible to provide the GPS unit in which the quality of a display does not cause a problem even by using the low resolution monitor, and in which a map and a position can be displayed when simple map data is used which the detailed part of the map is removed.
