To provide a copolymer having a specified structure which, when used as a binder for a negatively chargeable electrophotographic liq. toner, can provide a colorless, transparent toner image having excellent chemical resistance.
This graft copolymer comprises units represented by formulae I to IV (wherein R1 represents H or CH3; R2 represents a 6-18C alkyl; R3 represents a 1-3C alkyl; and X and Y each represent an initiator group, unit II or the like). Pref., the backbone of the copolymer comprises 60 to 80 (wt.) pts. unit I, 1 to 2 pts. unit II, 1.5 to 3 pts. unit III, and 350 to 600 pts. unit IV. The copolymer is obtd. by soln. polymn. or emulsion polymn. of a 6-l8C alkyl (meth)acrylate, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, and glycidyl (meth)acrylate, reacting the resultant termpolymer with (meth)acrylic acid to esterify a part of the epoxide of the unit III, and finally graft polymerizing an alkyl (meth)acrylate and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone onto the product.
