To use the spring constant of a grinding wheel as a desired spring constant proper to on-line grinding without being restricted by material conditions such as the shape of a base metal, the thickness and width of an abrasion grain layer and make it possible to set material conditions arbitrarily.
With an online-roll grinding device installed in a rolling mill, a work rolling roll is ground during rolling work or non-rolling work. In a grinding wheel 7 to be used in this device, an abrasive grain layer 1 is formed on a saucer-shaped base metal (thin walled disk) 2, and a slit 1a is formed in the peripheral direction of the abrasion grain layer 1. The base metal 2 is made from an elastic body of 30 to 1000 jgf/mm in a spring constant. In addition, slits may be provided in radial directions of the base metal and directions oblique to radial directions, and a plurality of segment abrasion grain layers may be arranged in a zigzag layout, and gaps between slits and segments may be charged with resin.
