Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a hard material which can reduce the amount of W used when compared with a cemented carbide and possesses such a strength and a toughness as to serve as a substitute for a cemented carbide; a production method thereof; and a cutting tool using the hard material.SOLUTION: A hard material comprises a first hard phase (first hard phase particles 10A) and a binding phase 20 containing an iron-group metal. The first hard phase has cores 11 comprising a nitride of Ti and shells 12 which are constituted from WC and cover the cores 11. The hard material may contain, as a second hard phase, cores comprising at least either of a carbide and a carbonitride of Ti and shells constituted from WC and covering the cores. Further, the hard material may contain WC as a third hard phase.
