NEW MATERIAL:A high polymeric polysaccharide substance having the following physico-chemcial properties: (1) Elementary analysis (%): C, 42.2; H, 6.9; O, 50.4. (2) Molecular weight: 7.98S (S is the Svedberg unit) measured by ultracentrifugation method. (3) Melting point (decomposition point): Discolors at about 262°C; and blackens at 263W264°C. (4) Specific rotatory power[α]D18=+33.2 (C=0.5%). (5) Solubility: Soluble in water, and insoluble in methanol, acetone, ether, etc. (6) Color reactions: Positive to the Molisch and anthrone reactions, etc. and negative to the aniline-hydrochloric acid reactions, etc.
USE: An antitumor agent useful as a viscosity increasing agent due to a high viscocity.
PROCESS: A strain of the genus Lactobacillus or Streptococcus, e.g. Lactobacillus jugurti No. 851 (FERM-P No. 5851) or Streptococcus thermophilus NO. 127 (FERM-P No. 5850), is cultivated.
