PURPOSE: To easily attain joining with necessary and satisfactory strength at a low cost by allowing a joining accelerator made of oil, an oil-based compd. or mixture to exist at the flat foil-corrugated foil contact parts of a honeycomb body and heating the honeycomb body in a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Corrugated foil 2 is superposed on flat foil 1 while applying back tension T to the flat foil 1 and they are wound to form a honeycomb body 3. At this time, a container 10 is moved up and down and the prescribed part of the flat foil 1 is coated with a joining inhibitor 8 contained in the container 10 by means of a coating toll 9 and a coating member 9-1. The honeycomb body 3 is then dipped in a liq. joining accelerator 4 contained in other container and this joining accelerator 4 is stuck to parts close to the flat foil- corrugated foil abutting parts. After primary heating, the honeycomb body 3 is combined with a jacket 5 and they are heated in a nonoxidizing atmosphere or in vacuum to join the metallic foils 1, 2 of the honeycomb body 3 to each other and the honeycomb body 3 to the jacket 5.
