PURPOSE: To supply oil pressure by a single modulator valve by switching the reduced supply pressure from one modulator valve so as to supply this pressure to the hydraulic servo of a friction engaging element while regulating the rise of pressure through each supply orifice.

CONSTITUTION: A hydraulic control device for an automatic transmission is provided with the hydraulic servos B-1, B-3 of a plurarity of friction engaging elements engaged to attain an engine brake in respectively different speed change ranges, a manual valve 31 for outputting oil pressure in correspondence with each speed change range, a modulator valve 32 for reducing oil pressure to the supply pressure PM to the hydraulic servos B-1, B-3, a 1-2 shift valve 38 and a pressure response valve 33 serving as switching means for supplying the modulator pressure PM, reduced by the modulator valve 32, selectively to either one of the hydraulic servos B-1, B-3, and supply orifices 34, 35.
