PURPOSE: To improve activity, selectivity and life of catalyst in hydrogenating the subject compound in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst by using a catalyst which is prepared by supporting a ruthenium halide on silica, fixing ruthenium hydroxide with an alkali and reducing the resulting substance with a specific reducing agent.
CONSTITUTION: In producing an alcohol useful as a raw material for various chemical industries and high performance solvent by hydrogenating a carbonyl compound in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst, a ruthenium halide is uniformly supported on a silica carrier, fixed into ruthenium hydroxide with an alkali and reduced with at least one reducing agent selected from methanol, formaldehyde and formic acid to advantageously give the objective compound by using a catalyst having extremely high activity, high selectivity and long life.
