Abstract:
Unsaturated coconut and/or palm oil fatty alcohols with an iodine number in a range of 65 to 85 contain substantially unsaturated fatty alcohols and mixtures of saturated fatty alcohols of formula (I): R<1>OH, in which R<1> stands for a saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched alkyl radical with 14-20 carbon atoms obtained by (a) fractionating coconut and/or palm oil fatty acid methyl ester into a fraction mostly with C16/17 components; (b) fractionating the C16-C18 fatty acid methyl ester fraction into a mainly saturated distillate and a mainly unsaturated bottom product; and (c) hydrogenating the bottom product to obtain the double bonds of the corresponding alcohols.
