Title:
METHOD FOR REMOVING FREE CARBON CONTAINED IN METAL CARBIDE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH0616409
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To inhibit oxidation and to efficiently obtain a large amt. of metal carbide in a short period by bringing a specified hot gas into contact with a metal carbide contg. free carbon to burn the free carbon.

CONSTITUTION: A disperse phase 2 and a reaction phase 3 are provided in a desired device made of SUS, etc., with a wire mesh in-between. An alumina grain, etc., are packed in the disperse phase 2 to form a packed bed, and then a silicon carbide grain contg. about 51wt.% free carbon is packed into the reaction phase 3. A nitrogen-air mixture contg. 1-15vol.% oxygen and which has been heated to 600-900°C by the heat exchange in an electric furnace is then continuously supplied from a thermally oxidative gas inlet 1 below the disperse phase 2 at the linear flow velocity of about 30cm/sec, the gas temp. is measured by a thermometer 4, the gas is burned, and the free carbon contained in the metal carbide is removed.
