This ice making apparatus comprises an ice making pan 2 for making ice and installed rotatably by a drive source, an ice reservoir for storing ice after the ice is allowed to fall by rotation of the ice making pan 2 after production of the ice and an ice detection arm 3 penetrating to an interior of the ice reservoir for detecting quantity of the ice in the interior of the ice reservoir and retreating from the interior of the ice reservoir after detection of the quantity of the ice. When an external force is applied in an advancing direction, the ice detection arm 3, the ice detection arm 3 can undergo deformation with the received external force. As an example of a deformable structure, the arm 3 is constituted of an ice detection shaft fixing part 3a having an ice detection shaft fixed thereon, an ice detection part 3b for making detection of the ice by touching the ice and a connection part 3c for connecting the ice detection part 3b and the ice detection shaft fixing part 3a and a torque limiter system 6 for deforming the ice detection part 3s in an advancing direction of the arm 3 when an external force not less than a specified level is applied in the advancing direction of the ice detection arm 3 is provided in the connection part 3c.
