To provide an image display device that can remarkably reduce a required memory capacity, decrease arithmetic quantity, reduce power consumption and perform a natural image display.

The image display device is provided with a decoder 12 that expands compression data and extracts a DC component and a primary AC component of a DCT coefficient, a pallet data generator 13 that selects a pallet color used for display among colors generated from the extracted DC component and primary AC component, a color quantizer 4 that approximates a color image outputted from the decoder with the selected pallet color and converts a code into a color code given to the selected pallet color, a display means 5 that stores color codes, a lookup table 6 that is used to convert the color code into color data, a display device 8 for displaying a color image, and a driver 7 that controls the display device 8 according to the converted color data.
