The image display device is equipped with a control means 3 capable of turning off a solid light source 1 at the timing of any during one color modulation period T based on the content of image data. Also, the image display device is further equipped with a bit discrimination means 3 (reference numeral is commonly used) for discriminating the presence or absence of the bits of all pixels for every color and turns off the solid light source 1 at the timing during the course of the one color modulation period T according to the image data. Also, the display device is equipped with a maximum brightness detection means which detects the maximum brightness for every pixel in place of the bit discrimination means, and turns off the remaining period of the one color modulation period T according to the maximum brightness of the remaining period of the one color modulation period T. The projector includes a projection optical system capable of projecting the image complying with the image data in such image display device E.
