An FED(field emission display) 10 is provided with a metallic gap forming member integrally constituting an outer periphery wall for forming the airtight spaces consisting of plural light emitting spaces 20 by disposing this member between a front surface plate 16 and a rear surface plate 18. The outer periphery wall for sealing the space between the front surface plate 16 and the rear surface plate 18 is, therefore, constituted by the peripheral edge of the gap forming member interposed between the front surface plate 16 and the rear surface plate 18. Since this gap forming member consists of the metal, the min. width size for obtaining the strength necessary for working and handling is made much smaller than in the case the frame member consisting of glass is used in order to form the airtight space. Then, the FED 10 which may be made as small as possible in the width size of the non-light emitting parts, i.e., sealing part, formed by the gap forming member between the front surface plate 16 and the rear surface plate 18.
