The image processing apparatus in the embodiment includes: a prone position image acquisition part for acquiring an image in a prone position obtained by photographing the breast region of a subject in a prone position by using a coil dedicated to mammary glands; an abnormality detecting part for detecting an abnormal part by using the image in the prone position acquired by the prone position image acquisition part; a supine position image acquisition part for acquiring an image in a supine position obtained by photographing the breast region of the subject in the supine position; an image mapping part for obtaining a mapping image that is proximate to the breast shape of the image in the supine position by mapping pixels of the image in the prone position in a position obtained by using a breast model estimating a variation of the shape of a breast; an abnormality information acquisition part for acquiring at least one of position information and depth information of the abnormal part in the mapping image obtained by the image mapping part; and a display part for displaying at least one of the position information and the depth information of the abnormal part obtained by the abnormality information acquisition part in the mapping image obtained by the image mapping part.
