To provide an image reading method capable of generating image data having few noises in a short time with a simple operation by irradiating with excitation light image carriers on which labeling material such as fluorescent material, radioactive labeling material or the like is distributed with two-dimensional spread, to excite the labeling material, and by detecting photoelectrically light emitted from the labeling material.
In this image reading method, the image carriers 3, 34, 44 on which the labeling material is distributed with two-dimensional spread are irradiated with excitation light 1, 1a, 1b, 1c, 33, 43, and light 5 emitted from the labeling material is detected photoelectrically, to thereby generate the image data. The image reading method is characterized by including an excitation/ detection step for irradiating the image carriers with line beams of excitation light, to excite the labeling material, and, after stopping irradiation of excitation light, detecting photoelectrically light emitted from the labeling material.
