To generate a good-quality, panoramic synthesized image even if precise shift in the photography direction cannot be easily achieved.
When a first image in which an entire photography range is photographed is composited for generation, the photography direction is successively changed for imaging one portion of the photography range onto an imaging surface, the read range of a second image that synthesizes one portion of the image imaged onto the imaging surface and has a prescribed width is set, the relative position of the first image to the second one read in the set range is identified, and the second and first images are synthesized. In this case, the read range of the second image to be read next is set by the identified relative position.
