An imaging apparatus includes: an imaging device for generating an image signal by photoelectric conversion of a subject image and; a focal plane shutter including a shutter base plate having an opening, a blade group for opening/closing the opening to control exposure to the imaging device, a blade driving member for driving the blade group, a driving spring for urging the blade driving member, a charge member for charging the driving spring, and a driving source for driving the charge member. The opening is put into the opening state when the blade driving member completes charge operation for the blade group. The driving source stops the charge member after driving the charge member and then starts the charge operation for the driving spring in a state where the charge member is stopped, so that an idle running section of the charge member before the start of charge for the blade driving member is reduced within a period of charge read from the imaging device.
