To provide an inter-vehicle distance control system capable of starting a traffic snarl follow-up dealing in the same operation as that in regular driving.
In this system, a follow-up control section 10 starts follow-up control to a preceding vehicle on condition that the vehicle following the preceding vehicle detects the characteristic value produced in the vehicle following the preceding vehicle when advancing. For the characteristic value, acceleration or car speed can be used. In the case where a driver has made an operation to advance his vehicle on the road of traffic snarl, follow-up control can also be started providing that the vehicle detects a change in the engine of the vehicle---at least one of increases in engine speed, in-take pressure, injection pulse width, engine oil pressure and ignition pulse width.
