Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain p-xylene, by bringing a non-equilibrium feed mixture of xylene containing ethylbenzene into contact with a complex catalyst comprising Group VIII metal, a gallium-substd. pentasil-type zeolite and a zirconia-alumina matrix in the presence of hydrogen.

CONSTITUTION: An aromatic C8 mixture containing ethylbenzene and xylene is brought into contact with a complex catalyst comprising Group VIII metal (preferably Pt), a gallium-substd. pentasil-type zeolite (A) and a zirocnia-alumina matrix (B) and cyclized, so that decrease in cyclized C8 is minimized to give maximum yield of p-xylene. It is preferred to use a catalyst of the formula (M is a cation with atomic valency of n; W is Ga and/or Al; Y is at least 5; Z is 0-40) as the component (A) in the catalyst. As the component (B) are exemplified two kinds of compositions of porous thermal-resistant inorganic oxides comprising ZrO2 and Al2O3.
