Title:
KAKUNENRYOYOSOTO SONOSEIHO
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5115800
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1507487 Fuel elements GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 16 May 1975 [24 June 1974] 20828/75 Heading G6C A fuel element 41 comprises a metal liner 24 positioned in the gap between the fuel pellets 16 and the cladding 17, the liner 24 having a coating 25 containing at least one additive on its surface adjacent the fuel pellets 16. Instead of the continuous coating 25, the liner 24 may have a coating formed of a multiplicity of longitudinal strips (Fig. 3, not shown). The liner 24 is formed of Zr, Mo. W, Rh, Nb or an alloy thereof and can be fabricated from foil by welding thin sheet to form the hollow cylindrical shape, or extruded from stock. One type of additive serves to affect the nuclear characteristics of the fuel and may comprise Pu-239 or U-235 for enrichment purposes or comprise a burnable prism such as Gd or B. Alternatively, the additive or additives may serve to control the fuel chemistry, for example ceramic additives such as Si or Si-Al 2 O 3 may be used as getters for fission-produced Cs, or Nb may be used for the control of O 2 potential. Yet again, the additive or additives may serve to impart to the fuel periphery a thin plastic layer with a high creep rate, and this would reduce or eliminate localized stress in the fuel element during reactor operation. Various methods of coating can be used including mixing the additive or additives with an adhesive formulation for coating on the liner, for example as a glaze. Alternatively, electroplating, metallizing, pyrolysis, arc-plasma spraying, vapour deposition, or electrophoresis can be used.
