To make a camera having a function for receiving a remote control signal execute its main operation by an optional remote control transmitter by making the camera learn the remote control signal.

Correspondence relation between a remote control code generated corresponding to a specified remote control signal and the specified operation of the camera is stored in a nonvolatile memory EEPROM 12, and the camera is set into a learning mode in which the stored content in the EEPROM 12 is updated by the mode setting means of the CPU 10. Especially, in a mode other than the remote control learning mode, the specified remote control signal is received and the operation of the camera corresponding to the signal is executed. When the camera is set in the remote control learning mode, the remote control code is updated. Thus, when the remote control transmitter is lost or when it is substituted by other remote control transmitter, the camera is made to learn the new remote control signal so as to solve the problem, and a dedicated remote controller need not be bought, so that this camera is economical.
