To provide a light intensity modulator capable of making good use of a short electrode length of an electric-field absorption type light intensity modulator, and achieving negative chirp properties in a lumped-constant type light intensity modulator.
There is provided a Mach-Zehnder interferometer type light intensity modulator including: a phase modulator P which is mounted on a first arm waveguide A1, can change phases of guided light, reflecting an external electric signal, and is achieved by forming an electrode on an optical waveguide; and an electric-field absorption type light intensity modulator M which is mounted on a second arm waveguide, which absorbs or transmits guided light, reflecting the external electric signal, and is achieved by forming an electrode on an optical waveguide. The Mach-Zehnder interferometer type light intensity modulator is composed of an optical circuit which makes input light branch into two and after that, multiplexes the light again.
