To provide a lighting system for a passenger conveyor capable of reducing consumption of electric power for lighting and indicating the direction of operation visually and applicable to an existing passenger conveyor easily.
This lighting system is provided with a first change-over contact 6 connected with a lighting lamp 4a on a getting-on port side and a second change-over contact 7 connected with a lighting lamp 4b on a getting-off port side. The change-over contacts 6, 7 are closed and all the lighting lamps 4a, 4b are lit during a time at which a passenger detection part 5 detects a passenger and a predetermined time after passenger detection operation ends. The change-over contact 6 is closed and the change-over contact 7 is opened during a time until a passenger is detected again after the predetermined time elapses to light only the lighting lamp 4a on the getting-on port 1a side and turn off the lighting lamp 4b on the getting-off port 1b side.
