Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve visual contrast feeling while avoiding black flotation disturbance by not performing processing that accelerates disturbance such as expansion of the dynamic range of a video signal and to provide a picture of optimum screen luminance for observers by reproducing a picture of high quality with luster.
SOLUTION: An image display device does not perform processing that accelerates disturbance such as expansion of the dynamic range of the video signal and improves the visual contrast feeling while avoiding black flotation disturbance, and reproduces a glossy picture of high quality to generally provide the picture of optimum screen luminance for observers. The image display device is equipped with a liquid crystal display part 11, a display control part 14, a back light 12, a back light control part 13, and a mean luminance detection part 15 to control the luminance of a light source according to the mean luminance of a picture to be displayed, and is further equipped with a peak detection part 16 to detect the peak value of the picture, thereby correcting the luminance control of the back light control part 13 according to the peak value.
