Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display element having a large area and high degree of freedom in selecting raw materials by forming the element with a combined polymer which is produced from at least two kinds of photocurable or thermosetting monomers, each having different polymerization rate.
SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element 1a has a structure that a volume hologram 2 patterned as it is called is held by the substrates 4, each having a transparent thin film electrode 3 at its inside. The volume hologram 2 is produced by repeatedly laminating liquid crystal layers 20 and polymer polymerization layers 21 and has such a layer structure in which the refractive index is periodically changed by the liquid crystal layers 20 and the polymer polymerization layers 21. In this case, the polymer polymerization layers 21 is formed by the combined polymer obtained from at least two kinds of the photocurable or thermosetting monomers, each having different polymerization rate. By this constitution, it is possible to polymerize by, e.g. a photo-polymerization method without use of laser interference light. Thereby, it is possible to realize a large area and the degree of freedom in selection of raw materials is enhanced.
