To provide a liquid crystal display device having a wide angle of view characteristics and high luminance.
In the liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal layer 7 between a pair of transparent substrates 1 and 2 and provided with transparent electrodes 3 and 4 for applying voltage in the normal direction of the transparent substrates 1 and 2 on the transparent substrates 1 and 2, respectively, and obliquely vapor deposited silicon oxide films 5 and 6 for changing the alignment directions of liquid crystal molecules in the plane nearly parallel to the substrate when voltage is applied in the normal direction of the substrates 1 and 2, the liquid crystal layer 7 is formed by using a liquid crystal material having negative dielectric anisotropy and <10 pN spreading elastic constant K11. Thereby, a reduction in luminance due to the electrodes, vertical alignment of the liquid crystal molecules in an initial state and rising of the liquid crystal molecules when voltage is applied are prevented.
