A liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate; a second substrate; a first electrode provided on the first substrate; a second electrode provided on the second substrate; a liquid crystal layer provided between the first substrate and the second substrate; and a plurality of first columnar spacers and a plurality of second columnar spacers respectively disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. In an area in which the first substrate and the second substrate are superimposed, an effective display area having a display portion which is a part in which the first electrode and the second electrode are superimposed, and a non-display portion which is a part in which the first electrode and the second electrode are not superimposed or both of the first electrode and the second electrode does not exist, is provided. The plurality of first columnar spacers is disposed in the display portion, and the plurality of second columnar spacers is disposed in the non-display portion. The plurality of first columnar spacers and second columnar spacers have different layout patterns from each other, and the generally same spacer occupied area per unit area in planes views of both.
