To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of displaying images on a whole display screen without a non-display area (frame) along the periphery thereof.
A backlight unit 22 emits a collimated light beam toward a liquid crystal panel 24. The liquid crystal panel 24 allows the collimated light beam from behind to penetrate therethrough and outputs a separate collimated light beam for each pixel to form an original image on the front face. An image enlargement panel 26 is a tabular optical element which enlarges the original image irradiated from behind by the liquid crystal panel 24 and forms a display image on the front face thereof. The image enlargement panel 26 deflects the collimated light beam from each pixel by means of refraction to shift the position thereof on the tabular surface, and allows the collimated light beam to exit from a pixel projection block corresponding to a pixel of the original image in an enlarged image display area at a spacing greater than the pixel pitch of the original image. A view angle enlargement panel 28 enlarges view angle of the display image by enlarging the angle distribution of each of the separate collimated light beam from the image enlargement panel 26 before being output from the front face thereof.
